Bronze

I believe I was meant to be an artist…though it took me a while to get the hint. A friend of mine suggested in the mid-1990’s that I give sculpting a try. I was surprised at how comfortable I felt with the art form. I have never really looked back: In 2004 I made the move from part-time to full-time artist. I have created two installation in Viking Memorial Park in Spring Grove, Minnesota, both paying homage to the Scandinavian heritage of the area where I grew up. A life sized viking, “Quest” was placed in the park in May 2000; “Ola and Per” (created in the image of the native cartoonist Peter Rosendahl) were installed later.

Rustic Wood

I have been working with fine rustic furniture and natural crafts for over 12 years. I am a self-taught woodworker who enjoys combining elements from nature together with antique, recycled or reclaimed wood from our rural heritage to create elegant furniture and functional  art pieces with an individual story. Each piece is one of a kind and hand-crafted. My designs are decorative as well as functional. Elegant rustic can be displayed anywhere!

Turned Wood

I have been fascinated by working with wood since I was 10 years old, starting first with cut-out lawn ornaments. I have experienced a wide range of woodworking, from home building to teaching to crafts. I’ve especially enjoyed the art of wood turning because it allows one to use creative talents that are only limited by the imagination. A wide variety of materials can be used for turning, from common to exotic woods, ceramic and metal. Most turning studios can be established in a relatively small space with few tools.

Blown Glass

As a young artist I was inspired by Henri Matisse. Upon seeing his large ‘cut-outs’ at the National Gallery I was very moved and knew at that moment I must make images which could also communicate a sense of dignity. Over the years by imagery focused on identity, self, family roles and relationships. I was more driven than inspired. I had developed a way of working from the reaches of my own memory and applied it to life’s situations, therefore learning about myself and those around me. To be successful, the work had to possess that sense of dignity. Today the work is still very personal, however my view is turned outward an inclined to seek the spiritual.

Turned Wood

I am a retired building contractor who, for over 40 years, owned my own residential building and remodeling business. I have always enjoyed woodworking, cabinet making, forestry management and the greater outdoors. I have been creating functional wooden artwork from local hardwoods using a wood lathe. Wood is always unpredictable; every piece being different.  Unlike other mediums where the artist decides what to use and how to create, the wood dictates much of what will be done and the artist is left to create within those boundaries.  My personal challenge to make something unique and new – something that nobody else has made before – is wonderful and addictive.

Stained Glass

Every piece I design begins with pencil and paper. I focus on the drama, yet simplicity, of lines impacting space. As lines curve, intersect or take a straight path, shapes and subtle images unite. With glass I also try to keep the play of light in mind. Inspiration can come from nature or contain elements of symbolism, or just pure imagination. So for me, it is more than just cutting glass.

Ceramics

Texture is a way to invite the viewer to use their other senses in experiencing the work, not only to see, but to touch and explore the work in a way we are often not encouraged. My ceramic pieces are small abstract objects that reference many biological entities without being any one specifically. I work with clay in the studio much the way my grandmothers worked with food in their kitchens. And so like good food, it s a multi-sensory experience.

My work is a reflection of my belief that life is art.

Turned Wood

started woodworking and woodturning in high school in Spring Valley, MN in the mid 40s. After my retirement I retuned to the craft and have been turning for fun ever since. I enjoy working with the medium of wood, as every piece is a surprise in grain and color as each piece is created.
